Case Study

A supplier of aero and turbine blades to all the major companies within the aerospace and power generation sector has dramatically improved profitability and reduced its cost per part by working with Teklube TS to develop Duracut AS Primaspark. This fluid is to be used in its expansive electrical discharge machining (EDM) facility complementing the state of the art manufacturing site.

BACKGROUND

Due to on-going growth with its manufacturing partners such as Rolls Royce, this blade manufacturer has historically used a “CSS142 type 1A approved”, fully synthetic EDM /Spark Erosion Fluid. As part of this company’s growth strategy, it was decided that a tailor-made fluid designed to meet all their EDM and spark erosion applications would benefit them greatly. The brief was to meet their current fluid expectations but look at the commercial (please see graph below) availability and operator acceptability whilst not compromising the performance levels required to achieve Rolls Royce approval standards.

Teklube TS was approached for their level of expertise and in-house chemists to formulate a state of the art high-performance, multi-purpose EDM and Spark Erosion grade. It was developed in conjunction with the company’s production engineers and Rolls Royce’s material technology team with these specifications:

  • Odourless in use

  • Low misting/fuming

  • Good operator acceptance

  • Long term stability and cleanliness

  • Excellent swarf removal

  • Protects electrodes

  • Category 1 full Rolls Royce approval (CSS NO: 142 Type 1A)

Duracut As Primaspark Details

A formulated fluid for EDM and full Rolls Royce approval, Duracut AS Primaspark is a specially formulated, high-performance, ultra-high purity EDM fluid that has been specifically developed for modern EDM. This Product holds Category 1 full Rolls Royce approval (CSS NO: 142 Type 1A).

Duracut AS Primaspark has been formulated around ultra-pure, low aromatic hydrocarbon base stocks and a specially selected additive system designed to resist thermal and oxidative degradation and enhance cleanliness. With a sophisticated anti-oxidant package, this product provides extended cleanliness to keep tolerances on all components. It is entirely odourless when in use thus improving operator acceptability.

  • Appearance: Very pale straw liquid

  • Odour: Essentially odourless

  • Solubility in water: Insoluble

  • Flash Point: > 120 oc

  • Viscocity @ 40oc: 5 cst

  • Specific Gravity: 0.81 (typical)
